Mrs. Brown
My name is Stephanie Brown, and I am one of two reading specialists at Longfellow. I live in Marion with my wonderful husband, Greg, and our daughter, Grace, who is a freshman at Union University in Jackson, TN. She is pursuing her MBA while playing collegiate golf. She is having a wonderful first year! Rounding out our family is our fancy, entitled cat, Coach, who is 19 years old. She has grown up with Grace and is treasured in our hearts.
I completed my degree through SIUC and my Master's Degree through Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. Since obtaining my Master's Degree, I have spent my time becoming LETRS certified, and completing 32 additional graduate hours through Greenville University, which centered around reading and the science behind how our brains learn to read. I am passionate about studying neuroplasticity and sharing that knowledge with my students. My goal is to empower my students with the science behind how to form and strengthen their own neural pathways, so they can take ownership over their learning. I love to learn, and I am passionate about sharing this love of learning with my students.
This is my 24th year teaching in the Marion School District. I began my teaching career at Longfellow by teaching 1st grade and K-5 reading, spent nine years teaching language arts at Marion Junior High, and ten years at Jefferson Elementary teaching 4th grade. I am now serving as a reading specialist at Longfellow Elementary. I will be working with your child in small groups and implementing need-based interventions centered around the science of reading. I encourage you to extend reading into your home. You can help your child become a reader by reading to him/her regularly and connecting positive feelings and thoughts with reading. Ask your child how they trained their brain; they can strengthen that neural pathway further when they "teach" you! I look forward to a great year of reading success!
